Facebook

Facebook for Old Folks Like Me

Staying up to date on PCs and communications is a daunting task. However, it does not seem as challenging as keeping abreast of the social networking that young folks are using today.

My first experience with Facebook was a year ago when I first signed up. However, there was no obvious instruction manual on how to effective use fact book to keep up with my family. Even if there was, I am very poor at reading instruction manuals (and asking for directions). Further, my children and grandchildren belong to the “entitled generation” so we rarely speak or communicate. When we do it always seems to cost me money, so for me it is best to have minimal communications. Consequently, they were no help in learning how to use Facebook. For a Nerd – no help means -- no problem. It just took me a year to get around to spending the time I needed to understand the basics.

When you register for Facebook using an email address and password, it sets up an account with several areas to publish information and comments. There is your profile, your wall displaying public/private comments and pictures, groups for family members alone and more.

When you write on your wall, upload pictures, or upload videos; they are published in the Facebook News Feed area for all family, connected friends, and potentially the public to view and read. Facebook gets people involved buy connecting more and more people together via their email registration. Friends of friends are encouraged by emails sent by Facebook to become your friend.

What is confusing is how the younger generation uses Facebook. I continually read posts to the Facebook News Feed that appear to be snippets of other conversations. They make little sense by themselves. However, one can kind of get a feel for what the younger family members are doing. One of mine posted something about Four Loko one of those caffeine and alcohol drinks. Not good to hear, so my reply is (trying to be hip) “Alcohol and caffeine drinks I never had as a kid, but I would probably be pushing up Daisy's if I did.” No young person trusts anyone over 30 – at least when I was young that was the mantra.

My Facebook interest is in tracking family and seeing what they are doing. So viewing the news feed with comments from the younger generation is about my current speed. Also there are new pictures posted in their profile. If I add anything, no young person will care which is fine with me. No one pays attention to a nerd as my Crazy Horse Saloon in Paris story illustrates. It is a fun tale for another time.

My post: “After buying my little Toro snow-blower in 1995 and having it work itself to death in the big snow last year, I thought about buying a replacement but at $300 plus it was too much. So I found a place where they sell parts for Toro snow blowers and $150 worth of parts and a pint of blood (when one works on machines one always bleeds) - presto a new snow-blower. Hey, just humor an old person. “ It got a thumbs up from my ex-brother-in-law but no comments from the young ones. So from now on it appears best to use Facebook to observe and report.
