Resistance is Futile

When “Resistance is Futile”, enjoy. As computers and the Internet mature, there is no escape from them becoming an indispensable part of our lives. Increasingly both combined are making an impact on our daily life. This is becoming more so in 2006 as Verizon rolls out their FiOS (Fiber Optic Service) in Howard County. FiOS provides very high speed Internet, voice telephone and someday soon TV.

PC and the Internet today provide all types of indispensable services to us. Cate and I get messages from the Howard County school system when school is out or there is an emergency in both e-mail and cell phone text messages. Cate registered for this essential service at the Schools Out web site http://www.schoolsout.com/schooldetail.do?schoolid=47.

Every day we get the current weather and the weekly forecast by going Internet sites. Whenever there is a severe storm coming, we use the WMAR weather radar http://www.insidebaltimore.com/weather/radar.shtml to track its progress and to determine when it hits our home.

If we go to the movies, we look for the movie clips on line. It is also better to purchase tickets on line as well for those very popular movies to assure that you get seats at the show times you want.

Grocery store coupons are available from Giant Foods http://www.giantfood.com/, Food Lion http://www.foodlion.com/, Safeway http://shop.safeway.com/, and other food chain web sites. Grocery shopping can be done on-line, if you cannot get out.

Are you watching Rachael Ray's 30-minute meals show? Get the recipes from her web site http://www.rachaelraymag.com/ and save scratching them hurriedly on a piece of paper.

Travel bargains, airline tickets, and hotel accommodations are easily purchased on line. However, be careful here because advanced purchases often incur penalty charges when travel plans are changed. Expedia.com charged me an excessive cancellation fee on a hotel room when I was unable to make the trip. The charge was so much that I would never use them again. Of course the Southwest “Ding” might cause you to get a broken arm if you charge over office partitions to get the cheap fare.

All the news fit to print representing a variety of view points not present in most journalism today is available at any time from Google and other sites. On-line bill paying is and banking is convenient and secure. Simple tax preparation and electronic filing is performed using a variety of free web sites identified by the IRS http://www.irs.gov/efile/index.html.

New VoIP services and video messaging services permit maintaining relationships with family and friends where ever they live. With the price of stamps increasing, this can save significantly. Vonage's VoIP $25 per month unlimited calls phone service provides a cost effective alternative to more expensive long distance telephone charges. Most Internet services provide web publishing capability, so that you can publish a family news letter, jokes for all to see, family pictures, or anything you choose.

These capabilities and more are just the beginning of the transformation of our society to a totally computer centric society. As the Star Trek Borg proclaimed, “Resistance is Futile”. The secret here is not to worry about how these marvelous capabilities, PCs, and the Internet work; but rather to only learn how we make them do what we want. Enjoy!
